The faith of the potter

must be strong, knowing that his work

will be transformed and not by him, trusting

that the heat is right, the glaze is good;

that both will act together, sealing up

the surface of the pot and washing it

with colour; imagining how this bluish grey

will turn inside the kiln to cobalt; this cream

to yellow, the pinkish-brown to black

and how each mix and ratio will react;

accepting what he makes may turn out

differently each time; learning again

and again that part of making pots is

letting go; giving up your artwork

for the fire to do its work, and having faith.
